MEGADETH
Após sua saída do Metallica em 83, Dave Mustaine uniu-se ao baixista de David Ellefson para criar o Megadeth, com a intenção não apenas de ser uma banda de Thrash Metal mas até desbancar o Metallica. Em 1985 lançam o primeiro e maravilhoso álbum Killing Is My Business And Business Is Good, que trazia um som pesado e letras repletas de ironia e revolta. A aceitação, tanto por parte da crítica quanto do público, foi excelente.
O sucesso da banda se consolida com Peace Sells But Who’s Buying, álbum de 1986. O ano seguinte é marcado por mudanças no Megadeth: saem Chris Polland e Gar Samuelson (respectivamente guitarrista e baterista) e entram Jeff Young e Chuck Behler. Em 88, o Megadeth lança So Far, So Good, So What! que contem uma versão metal do hino punk Anarchy In The Uk (Sex Pistols), cantado por Dave Mustaine: “Anarchy In The USA”.
Um ano mais tarde, Jeff e Chuck deixam a banda e entram em seus lugares, respectivamente, Marty Friedman (guitarrista já bastante conhecido no meio musical) e Nick Menza.
Em 1990, o álbum Rust In Peace, trouxe um Megadeth mais trabalhado, que entra para a seleta galeria dos grandes clássicos do metal, ganhando o primeiro disco de platina da banda. Uma das músicas desse álbum, “Holy Wars” foi usada como vinheta para abrir e fechar as chamadas do Rock in Rio II, pela rede Globo. O álbum seguinte, Countdown to Extinction, lançado em 92, tem letras abordando os problemas com drogas pelos quais Mustaine passou. Esse álbum também rendeu um disco de platina.
Em 94, Dave Mustaine, liberto da dependência de drogas, escreve Youthanasia, que conta com faixas destruidoras, de um rock n’roll singular e incisivo. Uma compilação exclusiva para os fãs foi lançada em 95: Hidden Treasures é uma coletânea com trilhas sonoras e covers.
Cryptic Writings, chega em 97, trazendo tanto músicas pesadas, como “The Disintegrators” quanto músicas no estilo hard rock, como é o caso de “Mastermind”. Mais mudanças: a saída de Nick Menza, substituído por Jimmy DeGrasso.
Quanto a shows aqui na terrinha, o Megadeth veio 5 vezes ! A primeira foi na 2ª edição do Rock in Rio, em 1991. A última foi em setembro de 98, no Monsters of Rock. O Megadeth não desbancou ninguém, porque o Metallica é uma ótima banda, mas com certeza conquistou fãs em todo o mundo e só veio acrescentar com suas músicas e suas apresentações ao vivo…
Como nem tudo é só alegria, em 1999, a banda lança Risk, um álbum que não agradou nem gregos nem troianos, por trazer elementos eletrônicos. Com o novo direcionamento da banda, o guitarrista Marty Friedman resolveu pular fora, sendo substituído apenas em 2000, por Al Pitrelli. Ainda nesse ano, a banda deixa a Capitol Records, assinando contrato com a Sanctuary Records, soltando “Capitol Punishment: The Megadeth Years”, uma coletânea, para cumprir contrato com a antiga gravadora.
Em 2001, as coisas voltaram a ser como antes. “The World Needs a Hero” é um álbum que agradou os velhos fãs do Megadeth, trazendo os riffs cortantes de Mustaine e os inconfundíveis timbres de guitarra que tanto marcaram os anos 80. Destaque “Promises”, com um belíssimo arranjo de cordas e “Return to Hangar”, uma alusão ao clássico “Hangar 18”.
No ano seguinte, o grupo lança em CD e DVD o ao vivo “Rude Awakening”, que soou como uma despedida para os fãs. É que, de forma inesperada, Dave Mustaine anunciou que se afastaria por tempo indeterminado dos palcos para se recuperar de um acidente – não muito bem explicado – que sofreu em sua mão, aproveitando assim para refletir sobre a vida.
Depois das férias forçadas, o músico resolveu retomar as atividades da banda em 2004. Não conseguiu, entretanto, se entender com o baixista e companheiro de longa data Dave Ellefson. Mustaine então reformulou o Megadeth e gravou um álbum inédito com Vinnie Colaiuta na bateria e Jimmy Sloans no baixo. Intitulado “The System Has Failed”, o material contará com uma extensa turnê de divulgação, ainda em planejamento. Para isso, convocou novamente Nick Menza para as baquetas e Glen Drover (ex-King Diamond) para as guitarras.
